From C.F. Uhlig from Chemnitz comes the Chemnitz tone disposition of the keys (layout) on the Deutsche Konzertina.

The company sign with a 'U' above the air flap.

A clear indication of the manufacturer is the hole pattern on the left and the three holes to the right of the handle, which can be found on all concertinas from Uhlig.

In the following picture by C.F. Uhlig, a 76-tone Konzertina of the same design can be seen on the harmonium.

Carl Friedrich Uhlig founded a company in Chemnitz in 1819, which however, did not initially manufacture any musical instruments. After he had become acquainted with the first accordions of the time, he developed a hand harmonica with ten keys and 20 tones, which he called Concertina.

In 1835 his company was registered as Concertina Fabrik, which developed into one of the largest manufacturers.

C.F. Uhlig was also an active musician. In the picture on the harmonium are a 76-tone concertina (as presented here) and a hexagonal model to the left.

Also an instrument with 76 tonesn from the factory of C.F. Uhlig, but from a later production. As can be seen from the presentation of the instrument, the for the owners, besides the musical purpose, representation also played a role.

A. Lange (1828-92) began his apprenticeship in the company of C.F. Uhlig and later became his son-in-law.

In 1871 C.F. Uhlig handed over the company to him.

From 1878 onwards it was called Lange und Uhlig.

In 1888 his son Emil Lange took over the business.

After his death in 1933 Arthur Müller became the successor.

With 18 employees, it is one of the few larger bandonion manufacturing companies in Saxony. Out of 1.395 companies there were 1.298 had no more than 3 employees (Graf, p. 109). In contrast to other large-scale factory production, the manufacture of musical instruments in Saxony was home work until the 20th century.

The Württemberg music industry in and around Trossingen (harmonicas, from 1903 onwards accordions) was characterised by industrial production.

The Konzertina in the hands of a street musician. Not always played for pleasure, but often it was a meagre living in the backyards of the tenement blocks of a big city.
