Even though the terms 'tuned beat' and 'tremolo' are usually used synonymously today, they are originally based on two different processes.
The tremulant was developed for organs as early as the 16th century: A switchable mechanism in the wind channel changes periodically the wind force for the pipes, which produces a sound vibrating in volume.
(tremolo, lat.: tremble, quake)
The tremulant was later also used in bandonions and accordions.
